Who Shares?

Meet the Tornabes

As a car-free family of four, the Tornabes are multimodal superstars. They made the decision to ditch their only car as a part of the Park it Pledge, our 6-month challenge to help people drive less and try new ways of getting around. “We had a car but then we found out about CarShare Vermont and it came down to either fixing the car and constantly paying for it… We said, let’s forget about fixing it”. And so their car-free experiment began. They use their feet or the bus to get most places in town, and when they want to plan a fun family adventure or go visit relatives out-of-state CarShare Vermont helps make it possible. When Jonathan reflects on his favorite family memory in a CarShare Vermont car he says,  ”without the cars we wouldn’t be able to take the kids to plays or get them interested in the arts. CarShare Vermont provides the memories.”

Living car-free also helps their family save an average of $400-600 per month, which they are able to put towards other things. “It’s so convenient and so economical and easy to do. Why own a car when you pay insurance to have it sit there?” says Jonathan. The Tornabe’s best tip for other families that are thinking about going car-free or downsizing – they encourage everyone to do their own mini Park it Pledge for a month and plan a couple fun family outings to see how it works.  He goes on to say, “I didn’t think we would be able to do without a car…I thought it would be really hard, but it’s been such an easy process.” When they think about how it feels to own a car verses sharing one, the Tornabes don’t have any regrets. “There’s this relief off of my shoulders because at the end of the day, I’m going to park the car and then that’s it, I’m done. I can just relax. I don’t have to worry about the oil changes or switching tires, and the maintenance.  I can just drive the car and enjoy it, and put it back and then that’s it.” Jennifer chimes in, “it’s really given us a lot of freedom.”

And, what do the kids think about all of this? When we asked how it felt to share cars little Jordan replies, “It feels good.” They even have a song about it, which goes like this:

Oh it’s smart to take the CarShare for a ride,
Oh it’s smart to take the CarShare for a ride,
You can go and have some fun,
Bring it back when you are done.
Oh it’s smart to take the CarShare for a ride.

Oh it’s cool to take the CarShare for a ride,
Oh it’s cool to take the CarShare for a ride,
You can load up all your junk,
If you don’t have your own trunk.
Oh it’s cool to take the CarShare for a ride.

Oh it’s nice to take the CarShare for a ride,
Oh it’s nice to take the CarShare for a ride,
You can go and see some sights,
Check out all the Christmas lights (not yet, but soon!),
Oh it’s nice to take the CarShare for a ride!

Enough said.  Thanks, Tornabes!
