Contest Winners Announced!
Wow, we received more than 100 entries for our "Name Our Cars" contest last month! Thanks to all of you for thoughtfully and creatively thinking of names for our new fleet of Subarus and Priuses–there were some doozies! After much deliberation by CarShare Vermont staff and board members, eight lucky winners were chosen. Please read below to find out our new cars' names, along with the stories that inspired the names. The eight people who submitted our winning names will receive a FREE membership for one year! If you're a winner and you haven't signed up yet, please get in touch with us so we can get you sharing! Call 802-861-2340 and ask for Annie.
And the winners are:
1) Clovis: This name should win because it represents a more "historical' name that will be brought back into modern day trend. This is much like the idea that car-sharing in Burlington will "make up for lost time" and better our future environment and community. Replacing old ways with new alternatives. Revitalize the name Clovis like CarShare Vermont will revitalize our community!
Clovis was named by: Chelsea Desrosiers
2) Clementine: Clementine was the name of Winston Churchill's wife, who first invented carpooling!
Clementine was named by: Gayle Bress
3) Ramona: I think one of the cars should be named Ramona because I loved the children's stories when I was growing up. Ramona was a spunky 8year old who was adventurous and excited about life, much the same sentiments I imagine this new enterprise bringing to Burlington.
Ramona was named by: Josephine Berger
4) Dewey: Named after Burlington native John Dewey who was a world renowned philosopher and educational reformer whose ideas inspired experiential learning.
Dewey was named by: Alex Morgan
5) Horatio: Horatio Nelson Jackson grew up on Burlington's Willard Street and was the first person to drive across the USA in 1903. Bud was his faithful sidekick pooch.
Horatio was named by: Rebecca Grannis
6) Otto: Besides the 'OTTO'/'auto' word play, Otto is a great name for a car because of Otto Scharmer, an MIT professor who studies systems, cause and effect, responses and consequences, and learning not just from the past, but from the future. Since carsharing is a piece of a big system, it can help change our world not just from using values we learned in the past (we learned to share as children) but from paying attention to what we want our world to look like in the future: a fun, happy, healthy green place!
Otto was named by: Oliver Barkley
7) Pearl: Pearl Randall Wasson was the University's first dean of women. This is a great name for a car because it is named after a great woman.
Pearl was named by: Anonymous
8) Nora: Nora is named in honor of a baby, who was born three weeks ago after her very nervous dad accidentally locked the keys in his car with the car running while his very pregnant wife needed to get to the hospital. They had to wait 30 minutes for help from a tow company. If there had been a car share vehicle down the street, they wouldn’t have had that problem.
Nora was named by: Dave Favazza
Again, thanks to all of you who submitted names and for making Horatio, Otto, Nora, Pearl, Dewey, Clovis, Clementine, and Ramona feel right at home!
The not-so-fine print: Only contest winners can redeem and use their contest prize. Cash will not be given in exchange for a prize. Unwanted or undredeemed prizes will be given away to individuals in need. Contest winners have until January 15, 2009 to redeem their prizes.
