Places in Between on August 28th
CarShare Vermont is delighted and honored to be part of an upcoming art exhibition, Places in Between, at Silver Maple Gallery at 129 St. Paul Street (in the space that will soon be our new office next door to Silver Maple). All of the proceeds of this special exhibition by Holly Miller and Sidney Eley will generously be donated to CarShare Vermont. We'd like to extend our sincere apprecitation to Holly and Sidney, as well as to our friends Bill and Bena Dodge at Silver Maple for hosting this exciting event. We hope you'll join us on Thursday, August 28, from 5 to 7pm for an artists' reception.
Places in Between is an exhibition by two digital photographers with distinct styles of their own. Holly Miller’s subjects, whether in Vietnam, London, Hungary, or the Czech Republic, speak to us with a candor that cuts through the politics of identity, reminding us we belong to one world and one common humanity whose mystery is unfolding everyday in our midst. Caught in passing, the subjects of her street photography speak to us about universal human themes.
Sidney Eley’s 35 years of infra-red photography are a testimony to her life-long fascination with the complexity of relationships. Although her images often explore more familiar cultural territory, they are transformed by an unusual light and by her digital crafting, leaving the viewer with more questions than answers and sometimes even wondering “in what world did this happen?” Her photographs tell stories that would be right at home in magic realist fiction.
Viewed together, Holly Miller and Sidney Eley’s images are a reminder of the many “places in between” which our lives are always navigating, whether we’re being made more aware of home when we’re traveling, or we're looking for the unknown in familiar surroundings. Both Vermont artists enjoy the excitement and physicality of street photography. They recently completed a weeklong workshop together in Rockport, Maine with Constantine Manos, a member of Magnum and the author of five books on photography.
